Policy 626 - Temporary Transitional Housing for Staff

626. Temporary Transitional Housing for Staff

Overview

The high cost of housing in the local area poses a challenge for ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ in its efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified employees. Recognizing the importance of affordable housing, the University has established a transitional housing program for staff. The transitional housing program is intended to ease the transition into the local housing market for newly hired staff by providing lower cost rental options for staff in select positions.

Eligibility

Newly hired staff who are appointed to one of the below positions may be eligible to receive temporary transitional housing assistance. Transitional housing may be offered to eligible positions based on the available housing inventory at the time a new housing request is received and approved. Any transitional housing offers will be subject to a rental agreement, facilitated by the University’s Property Management partner.  Upon separation of employment, transitional housing renters will have no more than 30 days to vacate the temporary transitional housing unit. Monthly rental rates, and subsequent annual rent increases, are determined by the University and informed by the local housing market. Pets may require additional fees and, with the exception of service animals and approved emotional support animals, are prohibited in shared wall units.

** Senior-level administrators are defined as staff hired via a national search, who are transitioning from areas outside of a 50-mile radius. These positions report directly to the President, Executive Vice President/Provost, or a Vice President.

As housing inventory allows, additional staff positions may be offered temporary transitional housing support for applicable vacant units, for a rental period of six (6) months. In these cases, temporary transitional housing support may be extended up to a maximum rental period of one (1) year.

Housing Costs

University transitional housing rental rates are provided in a six (6) month to one (1) year rental agreement, facilitated by the University’s Property Management partner. The University’s rental rates for staff are intended to be lower than the current market rental value for each property. Market rental rates are assessed on an annual basis and rental rates are subject to change annually, effective July 1. Any changes to rental rates will be communicated to current residents no later than March 30 each year. Employees are responsible for submitting a security deposit of  one (1) month’s rent, the monthly rental rate, and all utility expenses paid directly to the respective providers.

Request & Approval Process

Temporary transitional housing requests for newly hired staff positions are initiated by the hiring manager via Workday, and are subject to approval by the respective Vice President and Human Resources. Upon approval of temporary transitional housing, the newly hired staff member will receive an eligibility confirmation letter from Human Resources prior to exploring available housing options with Property Management.  While eligible employees may be approved for transitional housing, housing options are based on the available housing inventory. Assignment to transitional housing is not finalized until a rental agreement has been executed and a security deposit has been received.
