The 16th annual sacred drama, dance and song program "La Virgen del Tepeyac: The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe” will be performed on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mission Church.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 28, 2012  — The theater group El Teatro Corazon, ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of San Jose will present the 16th annual  sacred drama, dance and song program "La Virgen del Tepeyac: The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe” on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½’s Mission Church.

Always a standing-room-only event that is free and open to the community, La Virgen Del Tepeyac celebrates the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the year 1531, when the mother of Jesus first appeared to farmer Juan Diego. The drama retells the hardships he endures to bring the news of the apparition to the local bishop, and her wish that the bishop build a church for the indigenous people in her honor.

The program – in Spanish with English commentary throughout-- is presented by Sacred Heart Parish of San Jose and ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½. It is performed in special collaboration with the Sacred Heart -affiliated theater group Teatro Corazón.  A reception will follow the event.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe recalls the apparitions in December 1531 of the mother of the Savior on the Hill of Tepeyac outside of present-day Mexico City. The dramatic representation of “La Virgen del Tepeyac” tells the story of the hardships that Juan Diego endures.

Also during the celebration, the recipient of the San Juan Diego Scholarship, a four-year tuition scholarship to ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½, will be announced.  The San Juan Diego Scholarship is a need-based scholarship funded by ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ since 1998.  Candidates, who apply through Sacred Heart Parish, must meet ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ admission requirements as freshmen or transfer students. The recipient also is chosen based on youth leadership and parish and community involvement.
