Welcome to the Tuesday Teaching Advising Tip, an easy-to-implement approach that you can use immediately in your advising.
TUESDAY TEACHING TIP: Faculty Advising
Every May, all undergraduate students who will register for fall classes will have an advising hold on their registration. These holds can be removed by students’ faculty advisor (for each major) and in some cases by department or school peer advisors. You can find your student advisees on Workday under Teaching and Advising: Advising Cohort. When viewing your advising cohort, you can click on a student’s hyperlinked name and access their degree progress through Academics: Academic progress. Faculty responsible for student advising should make arrangements for students to meet with them.
This week, we challenge you to reach out to your assigned advisees about how they can meet with you, and structure your conversation in four sections, as described below.
Here’s one way to do it:
When you structure your conversation with students during May advising, we encourage you to break it into four sections, with a few guiding questions included for each:
Overall check-in
-
- How has your year been? What are 1-2 highlights?
Major advising
-
- What do you still need to complete, and what is your plan for doing so?
- What courses may help with your career interests?
Core advising
-
- What do you still need to complete, and what is your plan?
- Have you met with a peer advisor or an advisor from the Drahmann Center about your overall 4-year plan?
Career advising
-
- What types of roles or industries are you exploring?
- What skills or experiences do you want to build before graduation?
- Have you connected with the Career Center for internship or job search support?
To make sure you can maximize the time with each student – you may only have 15 minutes! – ask your advisee to prepare a few things ahead of time:
- For major and Core advising: ask them to share their four-year plan document, and have their academic progress on Workday open at the start of the meeting
- For career advising: ask them to think about their career goals and come ready to discuss their summer internship search or post-graduation plans.
DID YOU DO IT?
Let us know how it went. We would love to hear your feedback about how you implemented today’s Tuesday Teaching Tip. . The survey is anonymous, but if you choose to enter your name, you’ll be entered in a drawing at the end of the quarter to win a new book from Faculty Development!
