Faculty may require use of Respondus for certain online tests and quizzes. LockDown Browser is designed to work with many different types of assistive technology. However, due to its restrictive nature, it does block certain types of assistive tech and it risks interfering with others.
Please read our recommendations below regarding LockDown Browser, and for more information, please check out .
Recommendations for Faculty
Before administering an assessment with LockDown Browser, please first provide your students with a practice quiz in Camino that requires use of LockDown Browser. Please make sure your practice quiz includes all question types that will be included in your actual quiz, and please allow students unlimited attempts for the practice quiz in case their assistive tech changes during the term or in case there are issues they will need to troubleshoot.
Ask your students to take this practice quiz before any formal assessments that require LockDown Browser, and when your students take the practice quiz, encourage them to use any assistive tech that they will need for the actual assessment.
If your students have trouble using their assistive tech as expected with LockDown Browser, please direct them to contact the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) for assistance. In some cases, we may be able to introduce students to other tools that are compatible with LockDown Browser. However, if LockDown Browser interferes with assistive tech that is important for the student, we will need to plan for the student to test without using LockDown Browser.
If you need help with LockDown Browser in general, please reach out to Instructional Technology.
Recommendations for Students
If you use assistive technology when testing (such as text-to-speech or dictation), please read to verify that your assistive tech is compatible with LockDown Browser.
Your professor should provide you with a practice quiz you can take ahead of time using LockDown Browser. Please take the practice quiz at least a few days before your actual test using whatever assistive technology you plan to use for your actual test.
Please first make sure that you are using the latest version of LockDown Browser and, if possible, the latest version of your assistive tech. We have encountered cases where using older versions of certain tools seems to have introduced compatibility issues.
If there are compatibility issues between LockDown Browser and your assistive technology, please inform your professor and contact the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). We can help you troubleshoot issues with your assistive tech and explore other tools that may work better for you or that may work better with LockDown Browser.
