JST-ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ Hosts Nine Bishops for a day of Prayerful Encounter
The Jesuit School of Theology of ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ (JST-ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½) was honored to host nine Bishops from across dioceses in California and Hawaii for a day of prayerful encounter and synodal conversation on May 25, 2026. The gathering between bishops and theologians was intended to help the participants prepare for the 500th Anniversary of the Guadalupe Apparition in 2031.
The day’s events included three theologians (Timothy Matovina from Notre Dame, Nancy Pineda-Madrid from Loyola Marymount, and Eddie Fernandez, S.J. from JST-ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½), two authors (Monique and Joseph Gonzalez), two facilitators from JST-ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ (Felix Palazzi and Stephen Szolosi), and a dramatization of the the Marian apparition performed by the children of Saint Patrick, Oakland. The conversations focused on the theme “Beholding the Tilma: Like a bridge over centuries and cultures – the gift of Our Lady of Guadalupe for the Evangelizing Mission of the Synodal Church.” After the program, a festive lunch provided further opportunity for conversation and dialogue with faculty and staff from JST-ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½.

Barber, S.J., Bishop of Oakland; Most Reverend Slawomir Szkredka, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles; Most Reverend Felipe Pulido, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego; Most Reverend Rey Bersabal, Auxiliary Bishop of Sacramento; and Most Reverend Andres C. Ligot, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose.
