Certificate in British Sign Language Level 1

Qualification Aim

This certificate can be attained by candidates without any previous knowledge or experience of British Sign Language. It will enable them to achieve basic competence and confidence in productive and receptive skills .

Target Group.

This formally recognised qualification from Signature, the national sign language awarding body, is aimed at people who wish to learn the language in order to communicate with Deaf family and friends or to enhance their skills with Deaf people in educational or work settings.

Course Structure.

The course consists of three units, an Introduction to BSL, Conversational BSL and Conversational Skills, all of which have linked topics, such as school, college and work.

Unit 1 –An Introduction to BSL- takes 10 hours and includes the following topics:

  • Fingerspelling
  • Numbers, dates and times
  • Exchanging personal; information
  • Transport and directions
  • Weather

Unit 2 – Conversational BSL – takes 20 hours and includes the following topics:

  • Describing people, animals and objects
  • Discussing interests and activities

Unit 3 – BSL at Work – takes 20 hours and includes the following topics:

  • Exchanging information about school/college/work activities
  • Discussing refreshments

Candidates must pass all three units to achieve the full qualification.

However, units may be taken separately and in any order, although Unit 1 is designed s an introduction to the language and should, therefore, be completed first.

The total learning time is 50 hours: 2 hours per. week for 25 weeks (term time only).

Assessment.

Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit.

However, there will be a 4-5 minute conversation between each candidate and the tutor-assessor to demonstrate the individual’s productive and receptive skills. These conversations will be filmed and sent to Signature, the awarding body, for external verification. This applies to each unit undertaken.

Candidates are required to achieve 85% accuracy to secure a pass.

Qualification Objectives.

On completion of all three units, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand and use a limited range of words and sentences in BSL
  • Take part in simple, predictable conversations in BSL
  • Give and follow basic directions and instructions in BSL
  • Make and comprehend familiar statements and descriptions in BSL.

Progression Routes.

On completion of the Signature Level 1 Certificate in British Sign Language, candidates may progress to the following courses offered by the awarding body:

  • Level2 Certificate in British Sign Language
  • Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language
  • NVQ Level 3 in British Sign Language *
  • NVQ Level 4 in British Sign Language *

* An indication that both these courses’ contents and terminology focus predominantly upon issues connected with work within the Deaf Community.

Fees.

The total fee for all three units is £200 per. candidate.

If assessment re-sits are required, then these incur an extra cost set by the awarding body.
