| Qualification Aim
This qualification is designed to provide introductory knowledge
and skill for enhancing communication with a whole range of deaf
people. It assumes no previous knowledge or experience.
Qualification Structure
To achieve the full Level 1 certificate, candidates are required
to undertake and pass 2 Units:
- Unit K101, entitled Deaf and Deafblind Awareness, is the theory
unit.
- Unit T101, entitled Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind
People, is the practical unit.

Units can be taken in any order and can be achieved separately.
The recommended learning time is 20 hours.
Assessment for Unit K101 is external, by multiple-choice examination.
Assessment for Unit T101 is internal by assessment of practical
skills.
Target Group.
This Level 1 certificate is suitable for those candidates who wish
to acquire basic
- knowledge of how deafness and deafblindness affect communication
- skills to facilitate rudimentary communication with deaf and deafblind
people

Progression Routes.
On completion of Signature’s Level 1 certificate in Developing
Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People, a range
of further qualifications are available through the awarding body:
- Level 2 Certificate in Communication with Deaf People
- Level 2 Certificate in Communication with Deafblind People
- Level 2 Certificate in Communication with Deafblind People (Manual).
- Level 1 Certificate in British/Irish Sign Language.
